3. Goose Lake State Park
Habitat: Just west of the community of New Pine Creek on the California/Oregon state line, this Oregon State Park provides public access to Goose Lake in California and Oregon. The lake is large, (8 miles wide and 20 miles long) and shallow (average depth is 4 feet,) providing wet meadow, riparian marsh, and shallow water habitats. Access to the lake is limited to the Goose Lake State Park or by launching a small boat from the park. Goose Lake shoreline is heavily used as a migratory and nesting area for many species of waterfowl and shorebirds.
Birds: Clark's & Western Grebes, Marbled Godwit, American White Pelican
Directions: From Alturas, travel N. 40 mi on Hwy. 395, to New Pine Creek, turn W. (L) on State Line Rd for 1 mi to Park and Lake.
